2017 Swim

Galway Bay Swim Course

The swim from Aughinish in Co. Clare to Blackrock Diving Tower in Salthill is a distance of 10.5Km as the crow flies. However, it is not a straight crossing as swimmers have to navigate through swim gates (marker buoys) on the bay. In addition, due to currents, wind and tidal ranges of up to 5 metres in Galway Bay, swimmers can cover a distance of up to 13Km on the crossing. Swimmers should factor this into their training plans.

Note: If you are planning to swim this year, then we strongly recommend that you start organising your own boat and crew to accompany you on the crossing. Applications are completed online, through Eventbrite. From this, swimmers are offered a slot on the swim on a first come first served basis if applicants fulfill the following criteria:

  1. Provide your own boat (along with a Captain and one Crew member) to accompany you on the swim. Note: the type of boat most suitable is a 5 metre Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) with a 50HP engine. A VHF radio is mandatory.
  2. Pay the €50 application fee online via Eventbrite and commit to raising €500 (€1000 for relay teams) for our charity partner – Cancer Care West. (Note: the €50 application fee goes towards your fundraising target).
  3. All swimmers (solo and relay team members) must complete the Medical Form on the Galway Bay Swim website and submit to the Galway Bay Swim committee.
  4. Complete the 4km open water swim time trial at Blackrock, Salthill in a time of under 95 minutes. Relay team members must complete a 2km swim in under 50 minutes. The swim trial normally takes place on the first weekend in June. Details  will be emailed to swimmers and posted on the website. Note that overseas swimmers can complete an online swim affidavit.

Note: There will be a Waitlist (with limited numbers) for swimmers who do NOT have their own boat organised. Please select the Swimmer (NO Boat) category when registering on Eventbrite.
